what’s the capital of scotland?

Posted in bar, drinking, free stuff, friends, san francisco with tags , , , , on Wednesday 19 September, 2012 by the Notorious O.S.C.

it was another exhausting saturday night at the concierge desk. i had worked alongside dar. [as you remember, (or not),  she, her BayAreaBoyfriend, and Aries and I became total BFF during the employee trip to SixFags a few weeks back.]

anyway, where was i? dar totally scored a tons of stuff (luggage, purses, clothes, wine) from hotel guests who were moving–or something like that, and earlier that day she met lotsa people from her alma mater, so she was on a high after work. she felt like she had just been on a game show!

she and i decided to celebrate with a drink. she called BayAreaBoyfriend, and he’d been drinkin at theEdinburgh Castle since about 6pm.  we get there, and the dance floor is hoppin, the DJ is pumpin tunes from the late90s and early 00s. (YEAH!)

i was surprised at how much fun i was having. because I always remember Edinburgh Castle as a place of beer-from-taps-that-haven’t-been-cleaned-since-the-place-opened-in-the-70s; and boring-as-fuck trivia nights. bleah. (even though, according to their website, it’s been voted the best trivia night several years running. *what-EVER*)

anyway, it was fun to listen to late 90s early 00s throwback. (thong song, mariah carey, destiny’s child!) and the several shots of jamesons certainly fueled the fun.

CrazyCzech met us after work, and some random friends stopped by too. several drinks later, the consensus was to go sing karaoke. (kara-OKAY!!). it gets a little hazy here–BayAreaBoyfriend was being aggressive–dar tells us it’s a common occurence–i suggest that perhaps its a result of all the testosterone pumping through his little body. she is only somewhat amused. they leave to get some food into him, and the other two are rounding up some alcohol–i think.

suddenly, it’s me and crazyczech. so we have another beer. (a kilt-lifter for me. it’s a local brew!)

next comes pizza, and lotsa gummi bears, and the next morning, a slightly hungover blogger.

good times.

for my next trick, the Cliff House Infusion

Monday 11.8.10

OMG.  I must stop drinking so much.

on tuesday 11.2.2010 went out with aries.  didn’t do much, but we hung out at my place with our friend KetelOne Citron.  good times.

on wednesday 11.3.2010, it was hella warm outside.  Los Gigantes had just won the world series and the entire town was coming off a high from the victory parade earlier that day.

i pretty much did nothing the rest of the day.  i luxuriated. i may have talked on the phone. i don’t remember.  it was one of those lazy days off.

that night, I went to a concierge event at the Cliff House where I learned all about the history of  the Sutro Baths

oh, and free appetizers and free wine/champagne.  thanks, Where Magazine!
i heart my job.

i left the place, and rode my bicycle back downtown. this time, not even a bit intoxicated. wow.

there was another event that evening to which i’d already RSVPd –a private party sponsored by Absolut with free drinks from 7-10pm at Infusion Lounge but didn’t have any desire to go.  Infusion Lounge, although an excellent space to go clubbing, attracts a ghetto-ass crowd more suited for Suite 181.   i know.  eeew.

i was slowly riding down geary st, exploring theMid.

(sidebar) i really need to hang out in theMid more often.  It’s so very mid-century  over there.  lotsa old neon, and old skool bars, restaurants, shops.  its like traveling through time.

CrazyCzech txtd me in the middle of my time-travel, and we decide to meet at Infusion.

we arrive at about 9pm, and are greeted with a line about 15 people long. after a little  hemming and hawing with the door people, I use my oh-so-powerful position as a concierge to get us in without waiting in line. excellent.  membership has its privileges.

the place is crowded, and it’s 9pm.  only an hour left for the open bar.  so we get some Absolut-sponsored drinks.  music: not bad. stuff you’d hear on the radio.  the cluuuuub itself is cool.  mostly red.  nice space.

a few leftover Giants fans are peppered throughout the club, I see some celebratory tshirts and caps and jerseys.

i notice their booze locker, and club photog approaches us and starts to ramble on and on about bottle service with locker. some crap about if you don’t finish your bottle, they’ll keep it for you, etc. etc.  then he asks to take our picture.  ok, weird photo guy.

last call for free booze is at 9:57pm.  of course we drink some more.   and then we order another round–but this time we pay.

we exit the club and it’s only about 10:30pm.  and the question of the night… do we go out some more?

YES is the answer.

we jump in a cab and head for starbelly, but to our disappointment, it’s already closed. or closing. or something.  i couldn’t really tell, as i was already well on my way to intoxication-ville.

we forego food and decide that it’s a perfectly good idea to drink instead of eat.  (of course.)

we stop at Moby Dick, to  drink and hang out. i like it there.  i start to get flashbacks from the first time i met Aries. weird.

next stop. badlands.  it’s wednesday and it’s not too crowded. fun fun fun. (but honestly, after 6  drinks, anything is fun fun fun.)

we enter the badlands and order an irish car bomb.  this is when my memory is like swiss cheese. i get flashes of being on the dance floor.  and then later a cab. and then my apt. and some fun ensues.

the next morning, there’s a cute stranger on my couch, and CrazyCzech is laying next to me.

OMG. my poor liver.

fake factory

Posted in bar, day trip, drinking, free, free stuff, friends, hayes valley, ramblings, restaurant, san francisco with tags , , , , , on Wednesday 10 March, 2010 by the Notorious O.S.C.

10 march 2010.

last week when faith was in town, it was all about the factory!  we started at the Jelly Belly Factory in fairfield. it was actually kinda fun. we went on a tour and saw how the jelly belly(s) are made, and tasted some of the gross flavors. i tried rotten egg, canned dog food.  faith tried booger, baby wipes, and centipede.  eeeeeeew!

we drove up to wine country and looked around afterwards.  neither of us like wine. and it was raining.  so it worked out okay.  we had lunch up there. and made it back in time for the event at…

the cheesecake factory!  free food and booze.  good times.

we met up with my coworker J and her room-ate H.  normally, i never send anyone to the cheesecake factory.  it’s a chain restaurant, and there’s so much more to offer in San Francisco.  but some of my guests, (especially the Brits) love it–they’re probably amazed at the sheer volume of food that’s on the plate–usually enough to feed a small village for a week.

anyway, free food, champagne, etc.  and then out next stop was

smuggler’s cove (or, the bar-formerly-known-as-jade).  it’s now a tiki bar/rum bar.  it’s… okay.  it reminds me of  (the pirates of the caribbean at disney) + (long john silvers) + (captain morgan) = kind of lame.    and it takes a fuuuuuucccking long time to get a drink!  and some of the people there are the weird chubby retro guys who dress in only vintage bowling shirts , crew cuts, and clunky glasses–they kinda look like drew carey.  some of the girls are retro-50’s and fat-(ish)

people who dress only in period clothing are a little weird, at least in my experience.  (i’ll be the first one to admit i totally dress in vintage.  but i always mix it with something else. )

anyway, i musta been drunk by then, after all the free booze and the strong-ass, expensive drinks at the cove.

me and faith walked home.

but first we got pizza.

(i’ve been eating a lotta pizza lately. more on that later)

smugglers cove?  lame-ish. it’s not a place i’d hang out at. but i’d probably go there with a buncha people. maybe someone’s birthday. or maybe stop there for a drink before going on to somewhere else.  although, it’s pretty secluded. i dunno where you’d go after that. maybe to the opera.

film fest opening party

Posted in free, free stuff, friends, san francisco with tags , on Friday 13 March, 2009 by the Notorious O.S.C.

fri 13 march.

(stfu! today is friday the 13th)

SF Asian American Film Festival. opening party last night. (didn’t go to the film, because it’s usually boring as fuck.)

to state the obvious, there were a lot of asian people there! really.

overall, it was okay.  i went with HomeSlice. and at the entrance, we ran into Jamie, and since she’s the HBIC, she let us in gratis. score!   it pays to know people in high places.

i didn’t see anyone i “know”, except for Bradley (Jamie’s boif).

this economic reality is really affecting everything.  the event had much much less booze than in the past.  and it was only dessert-y foods that were on offer.  previous years included a selection of sweet and savoury selections.  (just last year, i believe, TheRestaurant was one of the food sponsors.)

right.

read my post about last year’s event.

i didn’t bother to go through the museum, because i find the Asian Museum to be quite snoozy.

the winner takes it all

free and crowded art

wed 18 feb

[where: 55 music concourse drive, 94118]

tried to go to the california academy of sciences (why isn’t it just called “the science museum?”)

it’s free every 3rd wednesday of the month.  and apparently i, and several thousand other people knew about it, because that line snaked all the way down into MLK drive, or JFK drive.  (whichever one is closest to the north side of the park)

there’s always next month.  although i fear that with the economy being the way it is, it’ll be more of the same for the rest of the year or so…

free culture!

3 feb tues

went to the de young museum today. it was free! and apparently, the cal academy of science is free every 3rd wednesday!  good times.

the de young is always too overwhelming for me. yves san laurent exhibit is there.  i found it snoozy. i didn’t go in, but the parts that i peeked at seemed very boring.
