dreamgirls, daves and grubstake

monday 30 august 2010

from the SHN website

another bender. this time it was friday 27 august.

one of the many perks to my job as a concierge is all the free shit that i get to attend.  dreamgirls just opened at the curran, and i took theSeedling with me.

but first, we went to happy hour at elephant&castle. $5 appetizers! $1 off drinks! (which isn’t really much anyway!)

for whatever reason, the soundtrack consisted of 80s alterna/new wave. which was excellent.  how long has it been since i heard siouxsie and the banshees; erasure; yaz; kajagoogoo.; heaven 17.  (well, acutally about a week–as you remember, i went to 1984 at the CatClub last week.)

so we went to the show. got there a little early, and sat in the mezzanine section with all the other concierges.  Ray&Scott were next to us, and so were DebbieL and her sis;  Lorilor and her sis were next to them.  I saw the GuyWhoWorksatTheMonaco who went to wicked and the Oscar party with the asian guy that Crazyczech knows from the gym; manager from the old job; random salespeople, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

the show was great for the first act.  great costumes, music, visuals, etc.

the second act, was draggy.  like it dragged on. i felt like they sang too much.  i realize that this is a musical, and that’s what they do.  and after awhile, i was getting tired for the lead who played effie, because she kept belting out song after song after song, complete with vocal gymnastics.

and now i totally get why mercedes (the fat black girl) from Glee is always singing that damn song which i had never heard of. snoozy.  spare me the melodrama.

there were some people that really loved it, they were standing up and applauding and cryingCRYING?  i know.  crazy. the show was over (finally) at 22:45 and i walked theSeedling to the BART station.  as i was walking home, i get a txt from Mikey that reads:

“come to Dave’s!”

“dave’s it is.”  i reply.

so i make my way over to the dive bar on 3rd st at market to find an entire cast of characters well on their way to drunken sloppiness.

Emmy, JNayNay, Mikey, and other random friends from various employments of theirs had been drinking beer since about 5pm.  you can imagine what state they were in. my stomach was still so damn full from all the happy hour eats at elephant&castle, so i started with a fernet.  good times.

JNayNay told me to put my drink on her tab, so i did.  i actually put several of them on there!  (tee hee!)

at about 1am. my cohorts were getting hungry.

so, like any self-respecting drunks, we pile into a cab, and go to theGrubstake. i haven’t been here in a few years, it seems.  good to see that it’s still busy, and some of the same busboys work there.

i think i had a claim jumper. and tato skins.   what was that i said about still being full from the happy hour eats at elephant&castle?

we leave at about 2am, just when the bars are letting out.  polk street is a fucking nightmare on friday night.  arguments over cabs. yelling. crazy drunken-ness. glad i can walk home.  good times.
