busy night

sun 29 march

wow.  friday night was busy.  not busy at work–socially busy.

i was off, and was trying to figure out what to do.

CrazyCzech and i decide that we want to absorb some culture, catch a play at the cheapy theatre on van ness.

baptized-to-the-bone3we saw Baptized to the Bone. about an artist hustler who blackmails not only a pastor, but his wife, too.  somewhat funny-ish. dark humor. cynical.  i kinda liked it.  and it was at the half-price ticket booth.

oh, but the show didn’t start until 8:00pm, so we decide to hit up some happy hour, or at least try some new bars.

we tried sushi zone.  there was already a line there, so we went to Pisco on market st.  (brought to you by the same folks as Destino.)  as we drank, we felt it was silly to be waiting and waiting for a table in a teeny tiny place on friday night–after all, we are professional eater/drinkers.  waiting for a table for more than a few minutes is an amateur mistake!

we rode and rode and rode around the castro/mission/etc.  we stumbled upon regalito just offa valencia. i’d passed by it many many times. never went in tho.  it was kick ass!  chx wings, and some sort of weird flatbread thing with prawns on it.  yummers.  and a pitcher of sangria!

at about 7:50pm, we realize we need to get the fuck outta there to catch the show.  we were on our bikes, so it shouldn’t take too long.

on market at van ness, we got stuck in Critical Mass.  bicyclists are really weird.

made it to the show, as mentioned above.

then afterwards, we decided to explore the neighborhood.

we went to martuni’s on market st.  it’s an old piano bar where drag queens and regular folks get together and sing show tunes.  how gay.  gay gay gay. and it’s supposed to be.

the front bar area was a little less over-the-top. just people, regular people. all ages. all types. just drinking. hanging out.  talking. laughing. enjoying themselves. i liked it.  the bartenders were quite dramatic and would break into song every so often to go along with whatever piano music was wafting along from the other room. watching the bartenders interact with each other was like a variety/comedy show.  humorous and entertaining.

2 drinks later we decide to head home.

but we stopped at Deco Lounge, since it’s on the way home.  it was hipster night. lotsa young kids, maybe barely 24 years old.

we stop in for a drink, and go to the bar in the back.

somehow we start talking to the bartender, a chubby-ish latino guy wearing a newsboy cap.

turns out, he and i have the same name.

from that very moment, we became BFF.  and started doing shots of tequila.

and i don’t remember the rest of the details of the evening. but the next morning, i wasn’t necessarily hung over, but quite depressed.

and i had an enormous scrape on my right arm, and i can’t figure out where the hell it came from.

good times.

road to nowhere

fri 20 march 2009

i rode my bike yesterday.  and rode and rode and rode.

my original idea was to ride over the GoldenGate Bridge.  but then i realized that once i went over the bridge, then i’d be in marin.  eeew.  and why would i want to be in marin??

i opted for a ride thru the marina, crissy field, and the presidio, which eventually brought me to the inner richmond, which begat GoldenGate Park, which begat the lower haight, and the Castro, and the Mission, and then eventually, 4 hours later, i went to the gym at new montgomery.

sidebar: saw some of my gym community there.  ChattyBrit, GuyWithBigNose, GuyWhoKindaLooksLikeMeBut Shorter, etc. it’s crowded at the gym at 6pm.  and it was irritating to have to wait for a machine, or weights, etc.

my day was filled with activity.

no wonder i was so tired when i got home.

## crash ##

Posted in annoying, lazy, ramblings, rant with tags , , , , , , , on Friday 20 March, 2009 by the Notorious O.S.C.

is what i heard yesterday afternoon coming from the walk-in closet, as i left the apt.

didn’t think anything of it.

till i got home.

a bolt, or screw, or support beam of sorts dislodged itself from my shelving unit, causing the whole shelf to come crashing down, taking all the clothes with it.

**sigh** i’ve been spending the better part of the day trying to get it back together, and find bits of bracket/support/screw/etc.  and find my powerdrill, and screw bits.  and i can’t find my drill bits. where the hell are they?

just came back from the hardware store. i got a reasonable facsimile of the bracket that broke off, and it comes with those little plastic screw support things. so first i have to drill a hole and then insert the bracket support and secure it with a screw… but i can’t find my drill bits!

[where: 579 howard, 94105]

went to the zipcar happy hour yesterday (wed) at Kate O’Briens on howard.  i haven’t been there since maybe, 2003?  (wait. that’s a lie. i think i went there in 2006 when i caught world cup fever!)

i got a free dink out of it, so it was cool.  marky met up with me after he got outta work.  haven’t seen him since new years eve!

i rarely hang out at irish pub-type places, so when i do, i’m always really excited about the food that’s on offer.  i love bar food!  since this one was irish, there was the option of adding curry to you fries.  yes.  indeed!  curry fries!  an enormous plate of medium sized french fries, smothered in “curry”, which tasted more like melted butter and spices.

i was in heaven.

mais oui, chez papa

[where: 4 mint plaza, 94103]

went to chez papa resto yesterday to partake in their $21.95 3 course prix fixe lunch special.

it’s in the mint plaza, which is a fancy name for “the-alleyway-behind-market street-off 5th-St.”  i have to say, the food is excellent.

i started with a butter lettuce salad with mustard vinaigrette dressing, fennel, and some crazy delicious herbs. CrazyCzech had a beef tartare with a teeny tiny raw egg on top.  mmmmmm

loch duarte salmon followed. yeah!  and duck leg confit for CrazyCzech.

dessert was a (what the hell do you call a flan that’s not cooked??  it’s not pot de creme, it’s called something else.  well, that’s what i had.)

to drink, i had a pastis.  basically a licorice/anise drink, with orgeat syrup.  OMG.  kick-ass!

there’s lovely outdoor seating, in the usually-warm and sunny stretch  of mint plaza. they’ve got good real estate there.  i don’t understand why it’s not more crowded.  perhaps at dinner.

the inside is like a french lounge. with tables.  it’s ornate, but nothing is pink or licght colored.  i very much enjoy the decor in there.  it’s young hip fun.

i dont think that my senior citizen guests at theHotel will enjoy it.  it’s too dark for them.

while we were finishing up lunch, the owner, manager, and other manager were having a meeting a few tables down from us.  the owner is so very typical “french-guy-in-his-early-40’s-living-in-a- major-metropolitan-city” looking: expensive jeans. expensive sneakers. black puffy jacket. somewhat spiky hair. just the right amount of scruff. sunglasses. holding a cigarette, but barely smoking it, because he’s too busy.  hilarious.  the other two  managers were dressed really well. and also quite trim. one was french, because they were all speaking french, but the tall skinny one wasn’t french, because when they all met together, they switched over to english.

i’m definitely putting this on my radar so i return here. i always forget about the other side of market street!

zuni brunch

[where: 1658 market, 94102]

went to zuni on sunday for brunch with frank and MishyMoo. it’s fun to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a while. MishyMoo just got her green MBA, and was in town for a networking event of sorts.  VanJones (info here, because i didn’t know who he was, either,) has  apparently just accepted a position as a white house adviser.  he was a speaker at her event.  exciting.

frank is gonna move back to ny, probably in the fall.

i had a ceasar salad (surprisingly enormous) and a pizza w anchovy/pine nuts/white cheese/oliveoil/rapini (?)  can’t remember.

but what i DO remember is the bloody mary.  not the best one i’ve had, but it was an excellent blend of spicy/tangy/horseradish-y/onion-y.  (and i don’t like onions!)

MishyMoo’s teeny tiny salad of greens seemed disapointing for the price. although her pasta with pork sugo was kick-ass.  frank’s sausage and eggs were, well, sausage and eggs.

good times.

cameo appearance

sat 14 march

xandra was in town yesterday for a conference. she was staying at the hyatt embarcadero, and we met at sens. (embarca 4)

there’s a happy hour at sens from 4:30-7:30.  never been there before. it’s kinda cool.  there’s outside seating, a covered patio, drink specials, etc.  although, i wouldn’t say the drinks were cheap by any stretch of the imagination. i think they were about $7 for a cocktail.  but these cocktails probably cost about $12-$15 normally, so i guess $7 is a deal, isn’t it?

office people were abound. many with their ID badges still clipped to their waistbands. lots of texting and crackberry-ing going on, trying to get in contact with stragglers still at the office.  overall, it was quite an attractive crowd. turnover was relatively quick, as it seemed many people needed to scoot out to catch public transportation and get back to the suburbs.

it was good to see xandra. we went to college together.  i met her freshman year, thru a friend from my floor.  then i didn’t see her again till we were seniors in college, and we both went on the same study abroad program.

over a few drinks, we caught up on our lives, etc.

she brought pics of an aries party past.  from 1999, i think . we had a laugh.  and couldn’t remember lots of the people in the pics. (it’s too bad we didn’t have enough time for me to get copies of the photos.)  there were some good ones in there.  i can’t believe that i was able to smash so  many people into my tiny studio apt in the East Village.   **sigh** it was so much fun to be young!

xandra was only in town for a day or so. and after we finished round 3 of drinks, i dropped her off at the lobby cab stand, and she dashed off to catch her redeye back to boston.
