hells kitchen

fri 18 jan

i was only at home for about 30 minutes when i realized that i’m in the most exciting city in the world, how can i stay at home on a thursday?

when i lived here, Hell’s Kitchen was sorta ugly, and dirty and dangerous. and mostly SRO hotels. there were a bunch of bars on 9th ave that i went to. Rudy’s, Mercruy, Collins Bar, Vintage(?), uh… an irish-sounding place that served kick-ass burgers! Fitzgerald’s? O’Shaughnessy’s?. can’t remember. some of those places are still there. but there are lotsa new places all around 9th ave around 43rd-52nd streets. so i had to check em out.

it’s still totally raining at this point, but whatever. i’m determined to see what these places are all about. i went to Therapy. it’s super-schmancy. 2 levels. seems kinda LA to me. then i peeked into Bamboo 52 next door. dead. more restaurant-like. then i went to Posh. the front patio was crowded with smokers. i pushed past them to find a casual kinda dive. DJ playing in back. small place. not so posh. i guess the name is trying to be ironic. looked like an after-work crowd. surprising, since it was about midnight.

then i walked on and around 9th ave, and stopped at several bars along the way. I can’t remember all of them. i didn’t have drinks in any of them. i just stood around, getting a feel for the places. the place called Ritz seemed kinda tropical in décor. what’s that cheesy menswear brand? Panama jake’s? that’s what it felt like. older people. like mid 40s businessmen. old disco. bleah. i walked past Vlada. crowded. shiny glass. didn’t go in.

i think i walked by Barrage. it was orange. too many aging hipsters trying to be young.

in my travels, i noticed that all the places i used to hang out were all on 9th ave. these new places are on the side streets offa 9th ave. this new world of schmancy bars/lounges is co-existing amongst all the dive bars. interesting.

Hells Kitchen reminds me a lot of the Tendernob. lotsa bars, old weird gay guys, younger hip 30 somethings, a cool restaurant thrown in here and there, a random crazy thrown in for good measure.

i heart NY. and i heart SF too.

i was more focused when i got up today. it’s probably because i only had a few glasses of wine last night.

i should learn by now that i must not turn on the tv. i watched project runway AGAIN. i’ve already seen these episodes! (the Jersey girl prom dress). and i’m still watching them! i tore myself away from the couch relatively early today and made my way downtown.

today i went to Klurk, in Chinatown-slash-SoHo-slash-NoLIta. i’ve bought stuff from this place before. it’s a little boutique, and i think the designer is also the owner. everything was on super sale, (50% off!) but i wasn’t feeling the styles or colors.

after wandering around chinatown for a while, i think i ended up on lower broadway somehow. and then SoHo. stopped at GStar. the employees in there are so damn skinny! and to Diesel to see what’s on offer. and KenCole, because CrazyCzech mentioned that shoes were on super sale. i popped into stores here and there. didn’t buy anything yet. i wasn’t feeling any of the stuff.

i stopped into Crunch Broadway to pee. and it started raining. again. since i was down there, i stopped into atrium. everything’s on ultra-sale there. i got a pair of GStar striped pants. half price. only $80. still expensive. but i liked them.

then i made my way home., because i was planning to meet Mo, Savagely Tan and Milhaus for dinner. we went to Gabriela’s. a Mexican place on 94th. we had the requisite powerful margaritas. and shared a bunch of stuff.

dinner was fun. i love Mo and SavagelyTan. Milhaus is a cute kid.

it was only about 8:30 when we were done, so i went back to their place with them. we talked, and reviewed Monday night. and reminisced about SF when they lived there in the mid90s, and NY when we all llived there in the late 90s into the millennium.

a few beers later. i went back home.

wednesday 16 january

carmie is here. she showed up after work.

what the hell did i do today? when i woke up, i decided that i was gonna try to go to the gym again. (i’m so ambitious) but this time when i turned on the tv, there was an America’s Next Top Model marathon on VH1. and on Bravo? Make me a Supermodel. again. stuck. and as i flipped channels, i found the ‘60s episode of Las Vegas that i’d been reading about for a few years now. i’d been looking for it on youtube, and nbc.com with no luck. so i watched it. very exciting.

by the time i left the house, it was about 2pm. i walked around the ‘hood, because i knew carmie was coming tonight. and i don’t know the restaurants around there. i was pretty unfocused again. i think its all this alcohol consumption.

i think i ended up in chelsea. did some window shopping. my wireless access in the bachelor pad royale has mysteriously disappeared. and i brought my laptop with me on my travels today. but i don’t know why.

i looked at stuff in universal gear, starting line, and other shops along 8th ave. most of it’s on sale. fashion-wise, i’ve totally noticed that it’s all about multi-layers. hoodie, bomber jacket, longsleeve, etc. all paired with tight jeans, and boots. but maybe it’s because im in chelsea.

tony and i decided to meet after (his) work for some quality father-son bonding. at about 5pm, i was at Rogue. it’s a regular bar with regular food and regular drinks. very pedestrian. perfect for after-work. i ordered a Killians Red. how faux-premium beer. it’s totally budweiser trying to be SamAdams. but it was on special. i also ordered some wings. yummers.

we sat there for a while, and chatted about nothing, about something, about nothing. he called his friend Leo. i was hoping that Leo wouldn’t be able to join us, since i find him annoying. he didn’t. whew.

tony can drink a lot. he had 2 glasses of albarino and then 2 killians red.

carmie was scheduled to arrive penn station at about 7:30, and tony had to catch a train around then, so it worked out fine.

i dropped off tony, picked up carmie, and we headed back to the bachelor pad royale.

a few years ago, carmie visited me in SF. we went wine tasting, and she got really drunk, and she bought a $100 bottle of reserve cabernet. she decided that she’d open the wine when she turned 40.

some drama ensued with her family this past week, and she informed me that we’d be drinking the wine she’d been saving. ok.

upon arrival at the bachelor pad royale, we popped open the wine. but first we took pictures of carmie with her wine. i dunno why. we’re strange.

a glass for her, a bout 1.5 glasses for me. we decided to go eat.

we decided to eat at this restaurant called Bodrum. it’s turkish. i think. we started with a seafood, tomato-based soup and a beet salad. excellent. next up was some sort of lamb dumpling/ravioli looking thing swimming in yogurt, along with some green herbs, and red spicy oil. excellent, but way too creamy. then minced chicken wrapped in phyllo with cinnamon and powdered sugar sprinkled on top. sweet and savory. excellent. our entrée was lamb tagine. tender and flavorful.

we stumbled and shivered our way back to the bachelor pad royale. (by this time it was probably about 11:30) we sat around and talked. and i had another glass of wine, and carmie barely had a glass more.

she had to leave at 5:30am to get back to WrongIsland. so we called it a night.
but there was still a little more than ¼ of a bottle left.

so it was mine.

a night with the guido

Posted in bars, drinking, friends, new york with tags , , , on Wednesday 16 January, 2008 by the Notorious O.S.C.

wednesday 16 januaryso i got back from yonkers at about 10pm tuesday night. guido and i had been txtng, earlier in the week and planned to meet up.

he lives up near 103 and CPW, and i was at 89 and WestEnd. we met in the middle-ish. at Dive Bar on 96.

sidebar: he’s not actually a guido. not even close. he used to work with me back in my advertising days. and back in the day, sometimes bars had a fragrance mist-er to promotion for a new–usually cheap, or otherwise overpowering fragrance. (you know, kinda like promotional postcards near restrooms. instead, it was a little device in the restroom allowing you to sample a certain– cologne.) so, guido went to the restroom, and sprayed and sampled till he was fully saturated. when he returned, we were able to smell him before we saw him. i said, “who’s the Guido?” and he pretended nothing was wrong. and we all laughed. and the name stuck. and the fragrance? Cool Water or Hugo Boss or something equally horrendous.

so we catch up at Dive Bar for a drink or so.

and decide to go further uptown. it’s fucking A cold! we stop in at the Abbey Pub. a sports bar on 103rd (?). a few more drinks. we meet some really dumb girl from san diego who was eavesdropping on our conversation (at the time we were talking about google, and the google-plex in mountain view) she asks if i work for google. we start talking, etc. and just moved to NY. she asked me if i go to school out in SF. clearly she is dumb. turns out she went to Chico State. party school. explains the dumb questions. we play the requisite game of “i know so-and-so.” our host-stye J, went to Chico. she doesn’t know her. we talk about facebook. blah. me and Guido hightail it outta there.

next stop, SIP. it’s a coffee shop during the day, and becomes a bar at night. it’s fun. crawling with young Euro 20-somethings. most, if not all, are staying at the hostel which is apparently around the corner. Europeans are fun. they really know how to enjoy life. we met some drunk Euros from i don’t know where.

the walk home was brutal. so i stopped in at another bar on the way home. and had another drink. by this time i think it was maybe almost 2:30. i have no idea.

and then this morning, i woke up dehydrated, but a little earlier than yesterday.
it’s fun to re-connect with friends from your past.

yonkers!

wednesday 16 january

tuesday was spent mostly hungover, and unfocused. i got up at about 11:30, thirsty as a motherfucker. i guess that’s what happens when you drink a lot the night before.

i decided that i was gonna go to the gym, and started to get my stuff together. and i made the mistake of turning on my tv. it was another episode of Project Runway. and also top 20 videos on VH1. and probably True Life, or Made on mtv. i couldn’t tear myself away.

I had this vision that i was going to hiphop class at 12:15 at Lafayette st. but i didn’t get my shit together until about 1pm. made it to the gym, and was totally uninspired. was bored. didn’t feel like exercising, and there wasn’t any music playing in the gym. quiet. snoozy.

i was planning to go to Yonkers to visit ninang, and lola and tatay. then i realized i didn’t bring my laptop-i wanted to show them pics of NY, and baby Brock, and etc. so i had to drag my ass back uptown. but of course, i wasn’t paying attention, and took a downtown train instead. duh. after my detour through Canal St, i eventually made it back uptown to the apt, only to turn around and head back downtown to Grand Central.

mo and savagely tan used to live in yonkers. and i know they’re so jealous that i’m going there. (uh, no they’re not)

Yonkers was pretty good. didn’t go anywhere. i got to practice tagalog. my lola seems to enjoy it. ninang too. tatay seems indifferent. he didn’t talk much. but whatever, he’s an 88 year old man. old men are grumpy.

i fixed ninang’s computer. or, tried to, at least. there were many “necessary updates” that needed to be downloaded, which she never does. her computer is running so damn slow. tony seems to think there’s some sort of spyware involved.

i made my way back to the city by about 10pm, just in time to meet up with Guido.

tues 15 jan

last night, Monday, went to the 718 with Parker, Mo and Savagely Tan. we started out at Radegast Hall. it’s some crazy beer hall with a retractable roof. so very Brooklyn. met up with Parker and his friend Misa. she’s from Boston. she got stuck in Brooklyn that night, because it actually snowed in Boston, and the buss weren’t running past Hartford.it was early, about 7:30 when we met up. the bar had food too! specials were bratwurst/kielbasa, some sort of stew, etc. food looked/smelled great!!! but we had a vegetarian in our midst, so we went somewhere else.

there’s a new-ish eye-talian wine bar over there, called D.O.C. as i remember from visiting HomeSlice last year in Rome, all eye-talian wines have some sort of code like this. and it has something to do with different winemaking processes. or something.

so we’re at D.O.C. drinking wine, (first Barbera, and then Dolcetto), having a cheese plate, a couple-a panini things, and some other small nibbles that were all veggie-friendly. as we sat there drinking wine and cheese in a bar in Williamsburg, we all started laughing at how much different this Billyburg existence is, compared to other Billyburg experiences from say, 1998.

after dinner, we returned to Radegast Hall. it’s a beer hall, serving beer beer and more beer. from mostly Germany, Czech, Belgium, and other beer-swilling nations. I had a BrouCzech Dunkel. and then another. and then another.

reminiscing followed.

the time that we all meant to meet up at the Abbey, (cool bar) but instead some were at Yabbie’s (not so fun bar). and since it was back in the day, we didn’t have cell phones, so we’d leave messages and call each others’ answering machines wondering where the hell everyone was… the time at the Stinger, when the Pimp Daddies appeared at 2:30… good times. the night at Enid’s when we drank too many of the drink special: Five Alive… never being able to find Pete’s Candy Store, so i always had to bring my Time Out NY map. the Budweiser bar. the dog bar. teddy’s. the Charleston.

more memories unfolded, and inquiries about past friends/couples who we’d lost track of. not surprisingly, most of them are married. and have kids and live somewhere outta the city. i’m glad i’m not one of them.

at about 1am, we decided to call it a night. i could stayed out for another drink or so, but Mo, Savagely Tan, and i were all sharing a cab back into the city.

good thing i went with them, because i woke up with such a damn headache the next morning.
